Are Siberian Cats Hypoallergenic? Yes!
How is it that Siberian Cats can have such a luscious coat and still get voted the most hypoallergenic kitty around? While hair and dander do make a difference, the true problem is the source of the allergen. Hair and dander are just the transport vehicles that the proteins, which cause allergic reactions, use to get around. Fel D 1 protein is the allergen that most people are allergic to. It is deposited onto the fur by sebaceous glands to keep the hair nourished and shiny. And, it is this protein which the Siberian produces minimal amounts of, compared to other breeds.
Up to 75 percent of allergy sufferers do not react to Siberians or have a low enough reaction to bring one into their home. Yes, reactions are certainly still possible, but way less likely. This has allowed many families with cat allergies to bring a Siberian into their home. That said, there are no guarantees. Siberians still do produce this allergen. And each individual produces a different amount, according to their own genetic make-up. We can help you determine if a Siberian is a good fit for your family. You can request a home visit to meet one of our queens and be in an environment with several Siberians in the house. Everyone will also have the opportunity for a playtime with their kitten as well, before bringing them home.
Preparing Your Home:
Want to reduce allergens in your home even more? To prep yourself, your house and your kitty for a long and happy life together, there are some daily rituals you can institute to make your life a lot easier.
Cozy up to your laundry machine. Washing your clothes regularly will keep those pesky proteins under control.
When you pet your Siberian cat, wash your hands.
Communicate with your Siberian. Some cats like to lick but unfortunately the allergens that most humans are sensitive to are present in their saliva. Teach your kitty that, as much as you appreciate the gesture, there are other ways to show love.
Over-the-counter medication. When you need a little more help for severe allergies, you may want to consider a daily allergy medication – whatever works for you. Most families who adopt Siberians do not find this necessary.
See your allergist. Some people respond well to allergy shots or drops. Most families who adopt Siberians do not find this necessary.
Your Home
Furniture Polish when you dust. One thing you can do is dust often and spray the polish directly onto the surfaces, as that is a way more effective way of removing dust while keeping air-borne allergens down.
Air Purifiers with HEPA filters. These are great in rooms with beds or lots of textiles as fabrics tend to be hair magnets.
For severe allergies, consider designating your bedroom a kitty-free zone. Your bed can be a cat hair magnet and you spend up to 9 hours a day there. You can always make it up to your kitty in the morning!
A HEPA vacuum with micro-filtration can keep the little proteins from getting all over your house.
Your Siberian
Brush your cat! Most Siberians LOVE being brushed. Your kitty will appreciate you keeping their fur luscious and glowing. And, it will keep dander and hair from spreading those allergens around the house. One thing – have someone else brush them if you can, as some hair will go flying during the process.
