Kittens need a small area initially to feel comfortable (like a bedroom) and become accustomed to where the food and litter box are. Then the area can be extended after a few days. We will send you home with a few days’ worth of food, just in case you decide to use a different brand and need to slowly transition. You have to bring a carrier to take the kitten home! We cannot risk hand holding the kitten to the car or for the drive home. Kittens may panic when brought outside or during the car ride.
When you first bring your kitten home, we recommend you set them up in a small place (like a bedroom) with their food, water, litter and a cozy place to hide away like a kennel or cat bed. This will give them a chance to get accustomed to their new space and know where everything is. After that you can open the door and let them start exploring the house.
At least one litter box on each floor of the house is recommended and if the area is large, like a main floor two is even better. You always want them to have easy access.
Our kittens are used to free feeding - they always have a bowl of food set out for when they get hungry. If you would like to put them on scheduled feedings talk it over with your vet when they are a little older.
Moving to a new home is exciting but also stressful. It is not unusual for a kitten to develop a runny noes or loose stool for a couple of days. Love on them and play with them but give them time for naps and adjusting the first few days as well.
Getting ready for a new kitten doesn’t need to be expensive. The basics are a litter box, non-clumping litter, and a bag of high-quality kitten food.
Over the years we have had a chance to try a lot of products. Some work like a dream and some looked good in the store but were disappointing at home. Great things that the cats go crazy for and others they completely ignore. Below are things we love and use regularly. Cozy cat beds, scratching posts, cat trees, clippers, and toys.
